Jonny Moore at Thruxton: Qualifying Pace, a Harder Race Story

Thruxton is the sort of place that separates the drivers who have been somewhere from the drivers who have not, and for a man in his first season of Carrera Cup racing it is about as stern a test as the calendar can hand you. The fastest circuit in the country, corners taken flat that every instinct tells you cannot possibly be, and a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup that rewards commitment and punishes hesitation in equal measure. Jonny Moore left Hampshire with a pair of fifth places in the Pro-Am category, a result sheet that does not flatter the weekend, and the honest truth that the pace in qualifying did not translate into the races. That is the reality of a development season, and it is worth being straight about it.

The weekend

Qualifying was the encouraging bit. Jonny put the JTR Porsche fourth in the Pro-Am category in both sessions, quick enough over a single lap to line up in the thick of the class fight and ahead of his experienced teammate Ollie Jackson on Saturday's effort. On a circuit where qualifying position matters enormously, because clean overtaking is so hard to come by, that was the right place to be starting from.

The races were the harder chapter. In Round 1 Jonny brought the car home fifth in Pro-Am, slipping a place from his grid slot, with the category won by Stephen Jelley ahead of Jacob Tofts and Oliver Meadows, and Jackson taking fourth in class. Round 2 followed a similar script, another fifth in the Pro-Am order, again just behind Jackson, with Jelley completing a category double that stretched his championship lead. Two races, two fifths, and a weekend where the wheel-to-wheel racing did not quite come to him the way the single-lap pace suggested it might.

The honest read

There is no dressing this up as a breakthrough, and Jonny would be the first to say so. But context matters. This is a driver in his first year in the car, up against former BTCC racers and seasoned one-make campaigners, at the most demanding circuit of the lot. He came into Carrera Cup as the reigning Sprint Challenge GB Clubsport champion, which tells you the raw ability is there, and the qualifying pace at Thruxton says it has not gone anywhere. What comes next is converting Saturday speed into Sunday results, and that is a matter of racecraft and mileage, both of which he is banking weekend on weekend.
