Lewis Gilbert Makes His BTCC Debut with WSR at Thruxton

There are gentle ways to begin a British Touring Car Championship career, and then there is what Lewis Gilbert signed up for. A half-season of car racing behind him, a single test day in the car, and a debut at Thruxton, the fastest and most intimidating circuit in the country, where the corners come at you in fifth gear and the room for error rounds down to nothing. In at the deep end does not quite cover it. He came out the other side with three finishes and a great deal learned, which on this weekend, at this place, is exactly the right result.

The seat itself is a SuperHub piece of work. We negotiated the deal and placed Lewis with West Surrey Racing, the most successful team in the history of the championship, which is precisely the sort of thing three decades in the paddock and a track record of raising north of £30 million in motorsport funding and sponsorship is for. Getting a talented driver into the right car with the right team is the hard part, and it is the part we do.

Thruxton hosted Rounds 13, 14 and 15 of the season, the mid-point of the campaign, resuming after the seven-week summer break.

The debut

Gilbert, a 22-year-old from Dalry in North Ayrshire, arrives in the BTCC with a proper single-seater and karting pedigree. A European karting champion who took the IAME Euro Series X30 Junior title and the Kartmasters British GP crown in the same year, he made his car racing debut earlier in 2026 in the GB3 Championship before West Surrey Racing came calling. WSR expanded to three cars for the second half of the season to bring him in, and he now shares a garage with race winners Charles Rainford and Daryl De Leon in the third BMW 330i M Sport.

Starting at the back of the grid, as a debutant should, Gilbert's job across the weekend was simple to state and hard to do: finish every race, learn the car, learn the circuit, and keep it out of the barriers on a track that punishes the smallest mistake. He did precisely that, building through the meeting to a best of sixteenth in the reverse-grid finale, a race that descended into a first-lap pile-up at the chicane and a lengthy safety car, exactly the sort of chaos a rookie can do without on debut. He kept his nose clean through all of it.

It was a hard weekend for WSR as a whole, in fairness. The BMW never looked comfortable at Thruxton and the team did not manage a single top-ten finish across the three races, with De Leon their leading runner. Circuits like this are not where the 330i is at its best, and there are far friendlier tracks ahead.

The team behind him

West Surrey Racing is the most successful team in BTCC history, an 18-time champion outfit run by the legendary Dick Bennetts, whose CV in junior single-seaters includes a young Ayrton Senna. For a driver in only his first half-season of car racing, there is no better classroom on the grid.

The real work at this stage is mileage, feedback and composure, and Gilbert banked all three at the hardest possible venue to do it.

And the timing could hardly be better, because the next round is at Knockhill. Home soil for a Scottish racer, a tight and technical circuit a world away from Thruxton, and a chance to race in front of a home crowd on only his second BTCC weekend. If Thruxton was the deep end, Knockhill is the one he has been dreaming about.
