Mikey Doble Banks the Points at Thruxton as the Season Resumes

Thruxton is where the BTCC finds out who has been eating their greens over the summer. Seven weeks off, then straight into the fastest circuit in the country, a 2.36 mile blur of fourth, fifth and sixth gear corners where the cars run flat out for longer than anywhere else on the calendar and the margin between brave and stupid is measured in inches. It is not a circuit that flatters everyone, and it is fair to say the Audi does not wake up in the morning dreaming of the place. Which makes three points finishes across the weekend for Mikey Doble a perfectly respectable return, even if the result sheet never quite caught fire.

Thruxton hosted Rounds 13, 14 and 15, the mid-point of the season, and the whole thing belonged to a man in a Toyota. Josh Cook, the self-styled and entirely justified King of Thruxton, topped qualifying, won the Saturday race that sets the grid, and then led Race 1 from lights to flag for his eleventh full-points win at the track. Around that, Ash Sutton went about the quiet business of running away with the championship.

The races

Qualifying was a scrappy session in the heat, and Mikey was one of a handful of drivers to have a spin without doing any damage, tidying it up to line up eighth for the opener.

Race 1 he held that eighth place, running in close company with James Dorlin's Hyundai for much of the distance on a circuit where following closely is easy and passing is anything but. Eighth it stayed. Race 2 was more of the same disciplined stuff, another eighth, another clean haul of points banked while the Audi did the best it could on a layout that asks questions of it.

Race 3, the reverse grid finale, was where Thruxton did what Thruxton does and turned chaotic. A first-lap melee at the chicane collected several cars, Mikey among those caught up when he was left with nowhere to go and hit the back of Adam Morgan, though he gathered it up and carried on. A long safety car followed, the race was extended, and on the final lap he was picked off by teammate Dexter Patterson in an opportunistic move that dropped him to tenth at the flag. Not the way you want to end a weekend, but tenth still scores, and three finishes from three at a track like this is money in the bank.

The bigger picture

Sutton leaves Thruxton with a commanding lead, 59 points clear of Tom Ingram, and the title is beginning to look like a formality barring disaster. Further down, the fight Mikey actually cares about, the Independents' battle, remains tight, and a weekend of steady points on an unfavourable circuit is exactly how you avoid losing ground in a scrap like that. The job now is to arrive somewhere the Audi likes and turn steady into spectacular.

The Doble family in the MINI Challenge Trophy

Thruxton also had the family name elsewhere on the bill, with Mikey's brother Isaac and their cousin Chris both out in the MINI Challenge Trophy for Race Car Consultants, still officially rookies in their first full season in the Cooper class after stepping up from Fiesta Junior last year.

Isaac was the quicker of the two across the weekend, qualifying well and running inside the top ten, tenth in the opener and eleventh in the finale after a recovery drive that gained him four places. His middle race was the one that got away, dropping from third on the grid to sixteenth in an afternoon best forgotten, which is racing at this level in a nutshell. Chris was steady and improving, coming home fourteenth, fifteenth and thirteenth across the three races and gaining ground each time out. It leaves the pair sitting second and third in the Rookie Cup standings, Chris just ahead of Isaac, which for two drivers in their first proper season is a thoroughly promising place to be with the second half of the year still to come.
