TeamSport and EXCELR8 Launch FastTrack, a Real Route Into Racing

Getting from a karting circuit to a proper race seat has always been the hardest jump in British motorsport. Talent is rarely the problem. Money is. For most quick young drivers the ladder runs out long before the budget does, and the sport loses people it should be keeping.

FastTrack is built to change that. It is a new driver development programme launched by TeamSport Karting and EXCELR8 Motorsport, and it does something the sport talks about far more often than it delivers. It gives an ordinary driver a genuine, funded shot at a national championship seat.

We have watched EXCELR8 up close all season, trackside at the BTCC rounds and in the MINI CHALLENGE paddock. This is exactly the kind of programme they are placed to run, and it is worth paying attention to.

What FastTrack actually is

FastTrack is an official partnership between TeamSport, the UK's largest indoor karting operator, and EXCELR8 Motorsport, a front running BTCC team that also runs the MINI CHALLENGE Trophy series shown on ITV4.

The idea is simple. Start in a TeamSport kart. Come out the other side, if you are good enough, in a race car. There are five stages, and unlike most talent hunts the early rounds reward learning rather than raw lap time. Drivers are judged on a balanced scorecard that covers race craft, fitness, communication, attitude and potential. Fastest is not the same as best, and the whole programme is built around that difference.

How the five stages work

The programme runs across five stages, each one a step up from the last.

Stage 1, Your Journey Begins, is the entry point at £99. It runs at ten TeamSport venues across the UK, from Glasgow Cambuslang and Newcastle down to Bristol, Reading, Southampton and Docklands London. Liverpool, Sheffield, Birmingham and Basildon complete the list.

Stage 2, Develop, is £149 and brings the first formal assessment. Stage 3, Perform, is £199 and moves into competitive running with proper scoring. Stage 4, Progress, is £299 and takes the strongest drivers outdoors to identify the eight finalists.

Stage 5, The Final, costs nothing to reach. The eight finalists get behind the wheel of EXCELR8 race cars at a UK circuit, and one of them walks away with the prize.

What the winner gets

The headline number is up to £100,000, and for once it is not marketing gloss. The winner receives a full season with EXCELR8 in the Cooper Class of the 2027 MINI CHALLENGE Trophy.

That is not a token drive. It includes race car tuition, the Motorsport UK Go Racing Pack, the ARDS test, race kit, a helmet and HANS device, full team support across the season, testing and a damage allowance. In plain terms, everything a first year racing driver normally has to find tens of thousands of pounds to cover, handed over as part of the prize.

Who can enter

The criteria are deliberately wide. You need to be at least 17 at entry and hold a full UK driving licence, or a provisional one at entry with a full licence in place by Stage 5. Maximum height is 6 foot 4 and maximum weight is 18 stone, for the obvious reason that you have to fit the car.

The one catch is that this is for newcomers. If you already hold a Kart National A, a Kart International B or A, or an ARDS licence, FastTrack is not for you. It is aimed squarely at drivers who have the ability but have never had the door opened.

Why it matters

Programmes like this are rare because they are expensive and hard to run well. It takes a karting operator with national reach and a race team with real machinery and a championship to put a driver into. TeamSport and EXCELR8 have both, which is what makes this more than a headline.
