Jonny Moore's Donington: A Points Finish and a Retirement

There is a version of a racing driver's development season that looks glorious in hindsight and grim while you are living through it, and Jonny Moore is currently in the middle of the grim-while-living-through-it part. Donington Park was another weekend of hard graft in the Porsche Carwow Carrera Cup GB, a fifth in the Pro-Am category in the first race and a retirement from the second, and there is no point pretending it was anything other than tough. But development seasons are built out of weekends exactly like this one, and the drivers who come good are the ones who keep turning up and keep learning when the results are not falling their way.

The weekend

Race 1 saw Jonny bring the JTR Porsche home fifth in the Pro-Am order, which on paper is a points finish and in practice was another afternoon spent at the back of a competitive class, behind his experienced teammate Ollie Jackson once again and unable to break into the podium fight that Stephen Jelley, Jacob Tofts and the rest were contesting up ahead. The category win went to Jelley.

Race 2 was worse, ending in retirement after just nine laps, the sort of DNF that turns a hard weekend into a lost one and leaves you with nothing to show for the effort. Tofts took the Pro-Am honours in that one. Two races, one points finish and one retirement, and a weekend that goes down as one to file and forget.

The honest read

Nobody is going to dress this up, least of all us. Jonny is in his first season in the car, learning a demanding category against former BTCC drivers and hardened one-make racers, and the results are not yet reflecting the ability that won him the Sprint Challenge GB Clubsport title. That is the nature of stepping up. The single-lap pace flickers into view often enough to show the potential is real, and the job now is the unglamorous one of stringing together clean races and converting positions, which comes with mileage and time and precisely the sort of character-building weekends that Donington served up.
