Jonny Moore's Croft: Another Hard Weekend in a Development Season

Let us not pretend otherwise, because pretending is not what we do here. Croft was the third difficult weekend in a row for Jonny Moore in the Porsche Carwow Carrera Cup GB, a fifth in the Pro-Am category in the opening race followed by a retirement from the second, and there is no spinning that into something it was not. This is the hard middle of a development season, the stretch where the results do not come and the effort does not show up on the timing screen, and it is precisely the stretch that separates the drivers who make it from the ones who quietly disappear.

The weekend

Race 1 followed a now-familiar pattern, Jonny bringing the JTR Porsche home fifth in the Pro-Am order, in the points but at the back of a class fought out at the front by more experienced hands. Race 2 was the one that hurt, another retirement, the third time in as many meetings that a weekend has ended without the finish the effort deserved. Two rounds, one points finish and one more DNF, and a weekend that goes onto the growing pile marked one to learn from.

The honest read

Three tough weekends in a row is a run, not a blip, and it would be dishonest to call it anything else. But context is everything. Jonny is a rookie in this category, stepping up from a title-winning Sprint Challenge campaign into a grid stacked with former BTCC drivers and hardened one-make specialists, and doing it in a car and against a level of competition that punishes every small error. The single-lap pace still shows up often enough to prove the ability is real, and the honest truth is that most drivers who go on to win in this category have a season that looks a lot like this one somewhere in their past. The job is to keep the head down, keep learning, and wait for the run to turn, because it does turn.
