Winner: Mikey Doble Takes Victory at Croft and Leads the Independents'

Some weekends you take the points and run, and some weekends you stand on the top step with a trophy in your hands and let yourself enjoy it. Croft was emphatically the second sort for Mikey Doble. After a season of recovery drives, damage limitation and grabbing what was on offer, the North Yorkshire circuit finally gave him a stage that suited the Audi, and he made the most of every inch of it, controlling the final race from lights to flag for a win that was as commanding as it was deserved. Two solid points finishes to open the weekend, then a victory to close it, and at the top of the Independents' standings his name sits exactly where a season this consistent says it belongs.

Croft hosted Rounds 22, 23 and 24 on the short, fast, endlessly flowing 2.13 miles that reward a well-sorted car and a driver willing to commit. Josh Cook took the opener and Ash Sutton the middle race as he continues his march towards the title, but the finale belonged to one man.

The races

Race 1 saw Mikey bring the Audi home ninth, a tidy and useful start to the weekend on a circuit where the front-wheel-drive cars were always going to be in the hunt. Race 2 delivered more of the same, tenth this time, points banked and everything set up for the reverse-grid finale.

And what a finale. Starting from the front after the grid shuffle, Mikey got away cleanly, put his head down, and simply drove off into the distance. Eighteen laps, every one of them led, the gap managed to perfection and the pressure from Tom Chilton's chasing Hyundai kept at arm's length all the way to the flag. There was no luck involved and no drama needed, just a fast car, a clear head and a driver taking his chance when it finally came. Wins like that, controlled from the front, are the ones that tell you a driver belongs at the sharp end.

Leading the Independents'

The bigger prize is the one that matters most to an independent operation, and Mikey now leads the Independents' Trophy standings, the championship-within-the-championship that measures him against every other privateer on the grid. A win, two points finishes and the class lead heading towards the business end of the season is a genuinely strong position, and it is built on exactly the sort of consistency that does not always make the headlines but always makes the points table. The wider Power Maxed Racing garage continues to punch hard, and Mikey is the one carrying the Independents' flag at the front of it.

The Doble family in the MINI Challenge Trophy

The support bill had the family name out again, with Mikey's brother Isaac and their cousin Chris in the MINI Challenge Trophy for Race Car Consultants, though this one was a tougher afternoon than their Donington heroics. Isaac was the pick of the two, taking a top-rookie eighth in one race and a twelfth in another, more solid points on the board in a fiercely competitive class. Chris had a weekend to forget, retiring from his races and coming away with little to show for the effort, the sort of luck that evens itself out over a season. Both remain in strong shape in the Rookie Cup, and both will be back swinging next time out.
