Mikey Doble Salvages Points from a Rollercoaster Donington

Some weekends test your outright pace and some weekends test your ability to keep picking the car up off the floor and dragging it back into the points, and Donington Park was firmly the second sort for Mikey Doble. It began with the Audi stopping out on circuit in the Saturday qualifying race, which is about the worst way to start a weekend short of not turning up at all, and from there it was a case of damage limitation, recovery drives and grabbing what was on offer. He grabbed enough. Two top-eleven finishes bookending a difficult middle race is not the stuff of headlines, but on a weekend that could have unravelled completely it was a decent return, and the wider Doble story across the paddock was a good deal brighter.

Donington hosted Rounds 19, 20 and 21 on the full Grand Prix loop, and the meeting belonged to Adam Morgan, who did the double in the CPRL Mercedes, while Ash Sutton stretched his championship lead beyond a hundred points and Dan Cammish won the middle race to leapfrog Tom Ingram into second overall.

The races

The weekend started badly. Mikey's Audi ground to a halt during the Saturday qualifying race and brought out the safety car, leaving him to line up fourteenth for the opener with all his work ahead of him.

What followed in Race 1 was the best drive of his weekend, a patient, determined climb through the pack to tenth by the flag, four places made up on a circuit where overtaking takes real commitment. Race 2 was the one that got away, the Audi sliding down the order to nineteenth after a scrappy afternoon that unpicked all the good work from the morning. But he dusted himself down for the finale and did it all again, carving back through from nineteenth to eleventh in a race that, as Donington reverse-grid finales tend to, threw plenty of chaos into the mix.

The wider Power Maxed picture

If Mikey's own weekend was a scrap, the Power Maxed Racing garage as a whole had plenty to smile about. Aiden Moffat took a superb second place in the final race, split only by the runaway Morgan, and Dexter Patterson once again swept the Independents' and Jack Sears Trophy honours across the weekend in the third Audi. Three cars, and between them a podium, a class clean sweep and a fistful of points, which for an independent operation up against the manufacturer money is a proper day's work. Mikey stays in the thick of the Independents' fight as the season heads towards its climax.

The Doble family in the MINI Challenge Trophy

The best Doble story of the weekend, though, came on the support bill, where Mikey's brother Isaac and their cousin Chris were both out in the MINI Challenge Trophy for Race Car Consultants, and both saved their finest work for last.

It did not start well. Both were shuffled back eight places apiece in a rough opening race, Isaac coming home twelfth and Chris fifteenth, and the shortened second race only partly repaired the damage, Isaac recovering to eighth with Chris thirteenth. And then the finale, where it all came good. Chris drove a blinder to finish second overall and top rookie, just four tenths of a second off the race win, with Isaac fifth and setting the fastest lap of the race into the bargain. For two drivers still in their first full season in the Cooper class, a podium and a fastest lap on the same afternoon is exactly the sort of progress that turns heads, and it leaves both of them flying in the Rookie Cup.
