Sixth on the Grid, Fifteen Seconds of Penalties and a Lesson in Track Limits: Jonny Moore's Brands Hatch Finale
Sixth on the grid overall, second in Pro-Am, six hundredths off the quickest Pro-Am car and four hundredths ahead of Will Jenkins, who has spent most of the year finishing second in the whole championship. That was Jonny Moore's Saturday at Brands Hatch, and if you had told anyone in the JTR awning in May that he would qualify there for the season finale they would have bitten your hand off. Then Sunday happened, and Sunday was a lesson in the one thing a 510 horsepower Porsche does not forgive on the Grand Prix circuit, which is putting a wheel where the white line says you cannot.
Brands Hatch's Grand Prix circuit hosted Rounds 15 and 16 of the Porsche Carwow Carrera Cup GB on 10 and 11 October, the last two races of the season and the last outing for the current 911 GT3 Cup before the new car arrives in 2027.
The quickest Saturday of his year
A 1:26.572 put Moore sixth of fifteen on the grid, behind only the two Century Porsches of Callum Voisin and Isaac Phelps, Jacob Tofts, Jack Sherwood, and Henry Dawes, and ahead of his JTR team mate Ollie Jackson and championship leader Stephen Jelley. Second in Pro-Am, less than six tenths off outright pole on a lap of nearly a minute and a half, and the first time all season he has out qualified both of the men fighting for the Pro-Am title. There is a footnote on the timing sheet that matters, though. Seven of his laps were disallowed for exceeding track limits. Seven. Everyone else lost between one and four. He was quick, and he was quick partly because he was using more road than the regulations allow, and that is the thread that runs through the whole weekend.
Round 15: third in class, then the gravel, then the stewards
The start was the problem. Sherwood went into the barriers at Paddock Hill Bend on the opening lap and the safety car came out, and by the time it did Moore had slipped from sixth to ninth, behind Jenkins, Jackson, and Jelley. He sat there for the first half of the race, then the Pro car of Sid Smith went after Jelley, there was contact, and Jelley dropped back behind Moore, who was now ninth on the road and third in Pro-Am with six laps to go and a class podium in his hands.
Then Paddock Hill Bend again. On lap 16 he ran wide, took the long way round through the gravel trap, and rejoined eleventh, behind Archie Clark and Jelley, which put him fourth in class at the flag. And then the stewards finished the job. Five seconds for exceeding track limits, then another ten, fifteen seconds in all, which dropped him to 13th overall and fifth in Pro-Am, seven places down on where he started. The best lap of 1:27.284 was quicker than Jackson's and Jelley's, which tells you the pace was never the issue. The discipline was.
Round 16: forwards from the back
The grid for the finale put him on the back row, 15th of 15, and the only direction available was forward. He got past Keohane and Cavers on the first lap, picked up Meadows, and spent the rest of the race in a dice with Dawes and Jelley that he came out of 11th overall and fourth in Pro-Am, four places gained, and this time without a penalty in sight. Up the road Tofts took his first outright win from Voisin and Smith, and Jelley wrapped up the Pro-Am championship ahead of Jackson, which gave JTR second in the category standings.
The season in one paragraph
So that is year one in the Carrera Cup. A class win at Silverstone, a handful of class podiums, two retirements, and more penalties than he would like, which is the honest summary of a nineteen year old learning a car that bites. The thing to hold on to from Brands is Saturday. He put a 911 GT3 Cup sixth on the grid for the last race weekend of the year with the best in the championship behind him, and whatever happened on Sunday, that is not a thing you can fake. Sort out the track limits and the rest will follow.
