First Pro-Am Win: Jonny Moore Breaks Through at Silverstone
Three difficult weekends on the bounce, a retirement at Croft, and plenty of people in the paddock quietly wondering whether the step up from Sprint Challenge to a 510 horsepower 911 GT3 Cup was going to pay off this year. Then Silverstone, and Jonny Moore won his class. Fifth overall, first in Pro-Am, a JTR one two with Ollie Jackson behind him, and the first category win of his Carrera Cup career on the circuit where the lap is so short and the field so tight that there is nowhere to hide a mistake. That is how you answer a question.
Silverstone's National Circuit hosted Rounds 13 and 14 of the Porsche Carwow Carrera Cup GB on 26 and 27 September, the penultimate weekend of the season.
Qualifying and the win
Moore qualified 11th overall and fourth in Pro-Am with a 54.880, just over half a second off Isaac Phelps on pole, with Jacob Tofts, Oliver Meadows, and Stephen Jelley ahead of him in the category. On a 55 second lap that is close enough to make a race of it and far enough back to need something to happen in front.
Something did. Round 13 ran the full 30 laps and turned into one of those races where keeping the car straight and the pace honest was worth more than any amount of heroics. Phelps won it from Jack Sherwood and Will Jenkins, but behind them the Pro-Am picture was torn up. Tofts and Jelley, the two drivers who had qualified ahead of Moore in the category, both failed to see the chequered flag, retiring in the closing laps, and Callum Voisin and Max Coates in the Pro class both finished two laps down. Moore kept his head, kept the number 12 Porsche out of trouble for half an hour, and crossed the line fifth overall and first in Pro-Am, 1.054 seconds clear of his JTR team mate Jackson. Pro-Am win, JTR one two, and a 55.422 best lap that was within three tenths of the race winner. Nobody handed him that. He was in position to collect it because he had driven a clean, quick race while others did not.
Round 14
The second race was always going to be harder to repeat. Sherwood won it by six tenths from Phelps, Jackson took the Pro-Am honours in sixth overall with Jelley and Meadows behind him, and Moore came home 13th overall and fifth in class, 10.9 seconds off the winner. The number worth noting there is his best lap, a 55.380, which was quicker than the lap set by the Pro-Am winner. The raw pace is there. What he is still learning is how to be where that pace matters for 30 laps at a time, which is the difference between a fast driver and a racing driver, and it only comes with laps.
So it is a weekend of two halves and we will take it. A first class win, a strong set of points towards the Pro-Am and Talent Pool standings, and a reminder for everyone, Moore included, of what happens when the pieces line up. One weekend to go, Brands Hatch on the Grand Prix circuit, and he goes there as a winner.
