Independents' Champion: Mikey Doble Seals the Title at Brands Hatch
Twelve months ago Mikey Doble left Brands Hatch four points short of the Independents' Trophy after a winner takes all final race that did not go his way. This time he left it as champion, and he did it the way he said he wanted to, not by tiptoeing round the Grand Prix circuit collecting the single point he needed but by going past Daryl De Leon on the last lap of Race 2 for fourth place and letting the maths take care of itself. Independent Drivers' Champion, a one two with Aiden Moffat in that championship, the Independent Teams' title for LKQ Euro Car Parts with Power Maxed Racing, and sixth overall in the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship. Not a bad return on a season that started with a win at Donington and refused to let up.
Brands Hatch's Grand Prix circuit hosted Rounds 28, 29 and 30 on 10 and 11 October, the final weekend of the 2026 season.
Saturday: third on the grid, fourth in the race
The Power Maxed Audis were quick again on Saturday, Moffat taking pole and Mikey third with a 1:29.207, and in the qualifying race it was Moffat who led every lap while Mikey had to recover from one of his trademark slow getaways. Ricky Collard jumped him at the start, but he got past Ash Sutton for fourth when the newly crowned five time champion ran deep at Surtees on lap six and Mikey took the boost through Pilgrims Drop to make the move stick. Fourth at the flag and a fourth row start for Sunday, with Sutton in a one off NASCAR inspired livery and running the number five to mark the title, which tells you what sort of mood the paddock was in for the finale.
Sunday: the title, done in style
Race 1 was Tom Ingram's, with a lovely move on Moffat and then a track limits penalty for the Scot that put Collard third, and Mikey slipped back at the start before coming home sixth. The important business was happening behind him. Gordon Shedden, his closest rival in the Independents' standings, retired after a first lap shunt that left his bonnet flapping in his face, and Charles Rainford crashed out at Dingle Dell. The lead went out, and going into Race 2 Mikey needed one point to put the title beyond Moffat.
He got a lot more than one. On the soft tyre, with Ingram running away at the front on his way to a second win of the day and Sutton and De Leon running themselves out of turbo boost with two laps to go, Mikey hunted down the WSR BMW and took fourth on the final lap. Title secured, and secured with a proper overtake rather than a safe drive to 15th. Ecstatic was the word he used afterwards, and he had earned the right to use it.
Race 3 was the chaotic finale that Brands always seems to produce, two safety cars, Ingram and Tom Chilton in the gravel at Paddock before the first corner, Collard winning on the road before a safety car restart penalty handed it to Dan Cammish, and Mikey came through all of it to finish tenth. Moffat was fourth and Dexter Patterson, the Jack Sears Trophy champion, was third, which made it three Power Maxed Audis in the top ten and three championships in the Power Maxed garage.
What it means
Two outright wins this year, at Donington and Croft, a qualifying race win at Silverstone, the Independents' Trophy, and sixth in the final overall standings on 276 points, in a car that was brand new in April. Collard's Race 3 penalty was what settled that last one, dropping him to seventh three points behind, and Mikey will not be complaining. He said after the race that he wanted people to see him as a multiple race winner and an independent champion, and now they can, because he is. The conversation for 2027 is already about overall glory, and on the evidence of this year nobody is laughing at that.
